Hatikva (Hope)
We are all tiny candles
in a dark forgotten cave
No light to warm or comfort us
no light to give us hope
How can we burn without a flame?
How sweet can hard wax be?
We look to one another
but they've no light to give
"Strike a match!" -a breathy prayer
Who's got the strength to do it?
"I once had a flame" one sighs
"but the wind really blew it"
A flame requires passion
a flame requires heart
Most of all we must have hope
to make that fire start
A flicker! A spark! But died once more
"You lying peevish thing!
That’s not the way unto the light!
I'll listen to you no more!"
They'd try and try and fail
each at his own turn
Then a tiny candle, bent and worn
began to brightly burn
It burned with strength of heart,
kindled by undying hope
"Let us feed off his light!"
claimed all that had failed
So then they lit themselves aglow
till all the candles done
Then came the Wind of Adversity
and blew all out but one.
